The Science Committee is responsible for overseeing research and development programs at all of the above agencies. In doing so, the Committee monitors these programs to ensure that Federal tax dollars are being spent wisely and efficiently and that America's Federal science and technology enterprise maintains its world preeminence.
Additionally, the Committee also tackles some of today's toughest issues and proposes ways in which research and development can solve some of our nation's most pressing problems.

Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight
The Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight handles oversight and investigative activities on the entire jurisdiction of the Full Science and Technology Committee, including much of the non-defense Federal research and development portfolio. The Subcommittee has been reinstated for the 110th Congress after its dissolution by the Republican leadership in 1995. Congresswoman Hooley serves as Vice Chairwoman of the Subcommittee, where she works to ensure that the federal government does not squelch sound science in favor of the opinions of biased policymakers on scientific issues.
Subcommittee on Research and Science Education
In general, the Subcommittee handles issues related to education, basic research, and the health of the U.S. academic research enterprise. The Subcommittee oversees the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Fire Administration (part of DHS), and the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program. Matters before the Subcommittee include science and math education, computer security, government-wide R&D initiatives such as information technology and nanotechnology, and advancing fire and earthquake mitigation efforts.
